Se casó con Jodi Lynn en 1989, con quien tuvo un hijo en 1993. Su divorcio en 1999. Mark conoció a su segunda esposa, Sara, durante una firma de autógrafos en San Diego, California, con quien se casó el 21 de julio de 2000. Juntos han tenido dos hijas. A principios de 2008, Sara Calaway dio a conocer en una entrevista que se habían separado.
Se graduó en la Escuela Secundaria Waltrip High School en 1983. Calaway asistió al Angelina College, una escuela de baloncesto en donde pretendía seguir como profesional, pero una lesión en su rodilla lo obligó a abandonar ese deporte.
Carrera
Inicios
Debutó en 1984 en WCCW bajo el nombre de Texas Red frente a Bruiser Brody. En 1988, Calaway dejó la WCCW y luchó en varias promociones con personalidades y nombres distintos, más notablemente en la United States Wrestling Association, donde ganó el Campeonato Mundial Peso Pesado Unificado de la USWA, su primer campeonato de lucha profesional, el 1 de abril de 1989, derrotando a Jerry "The King" Lawler.
World Championship Wrestling
1989-1990
Mientras estuvo allí, fue conocido como Mean Mark Callous y formó parte de un equipo llamado Skyscrapers. Su lucha más conocida en la WCW fue frente a Lex Luger, por el Campeonato de los Estados Unidos de la NWA, durante el evento Great American Bash 1990. A finales de 1990, la WCW no renovó el contrato de Calaway, el cual firmó por la WWF en octubre de 1990.
